Graced by a perfect weather day for the second year in a row, the “Country Day at Pardon Gray” event was a tremendous success! In sun shine and perfect temperatures, children and adults alike enjoy a day full of activities, entertainment and great food. All day long the crowd was enthusiastic and active.
Both children and parents lined up for fun activities with excitement and happiness written all over their faces. Pony rides provided by Roseland Acres Equestrian Center, a petting zoo, face painting, pumpkin decorating, a children’s obstacle course and games such as bean bag toss and gourd hunting competed for attention – and all were busy the entire day.
In addition, hundreds had a chance to see a brand new Tiverton Police car, fire vehicles and heavy equipment; take a hay ride and watch the exciting tractor pull competition. The country band, Country Memories, kept the air filled with music while the Town Howlers square dance club strutted their stuff to much appreciation and applause from the crowd.
When people got hungry, there was no need to go home. Cooked right there at the grill behind the big top tent, there was great food and beverages to be had. Chowder, provided by the Sakonnet Fish Company made a great appetizer while cotton candy and lemon straws were sweet desserts. That’s not even mentioning the delicious home made pies baked for the pie contest – slices of which could be bought and piled with a free scoop of Gray’s Ice Cream.

As an added bonus to the day, there were many educational opportunities. Members of the 2nd RI Regiment were in attendance to talk about revolutionary war soldiers’ lives. The local chapter of the Astronomical Society had it telescopes set up and was able to show off the heavens including Venus and the sun with its periodic sun spots. The URI Master Gardeners helped the home gardener with questions and problems. Trail walks and historic cemetery talks developed appreciation for what Tiverton can offer its visitors and residents. A host of additional activities and educational opportunities made the day a memorable experience for all.
The members and volunteers of the Tiverton Land Trust are proud to have been able to stage this wonderful event. Our goal was to show the desirability of saving land in Tiverton from unnecessary development but also to preserve the town’s agricultural history. We hope this event encourages your support for continued efforts to save the land – whether by volunteering your time or with donations to its land purchasing fund.
Please support our generous and gracious sponsors.
Also a special thanks to Bill Hathaway who spent loads of time getting the area in shape and organizing the hay rides, the tractor pulls and much more.
And the many helpers, volunteers and friends that were on hand to make this day such a success!
